pH Balance

What Causes Me to be Acidic?

The reason acidosis is more common in our society is mostly due to the typical American diet, which is far too high in acid-producing animal products like meat, eggs and dairy, and far too low in alkaline-producing foods like fresh vegetables. Additionally, we eat acid-producing processed foods like white flour and sugar and drink acid-producing beverages like coffee and soft drinks. We use too many drugs, which are acid-forming; and we use artificial chemical sweeteners like NutraSweet, Equal, or aspartame, which are extremely acid-forming. One of the best things we can do to correct an overly-acid body is to clean up our diet and lifestyle.

Restoring pH Balance in the Body

Your body is able to assimilate minerals and nutrients properly only when its pH is balanced. It is therefore possible for you to be taking healthy nutrients and yet be unable to absorb or use them. If you are not getting the results you expected from your nutritional or herbal program, look for an acid-alkaline imbalance. Even the right supplement program may not work if your body's pH is out of balance.

There are many ways to improve your pH balance in your body.  We can meet with you and help you get back on the road to health and healing.

Monitor and Balance

the Body’s pH

What is pH?

The body is, for the most part, made up of water, which is a biological advantage since oxygen, nutrients, and bio-chemicals need to be transported throughout the body tissues by water for efficiency.  Our water-based body is made up of acid and alkaline properties, which are measured by a graduated scale called pH (Potential Hydrogen).  The acidity and alkalinity must remain in the proper balance for a healthy state to exist in the body.  If this balance is consistently on the alkaline side, our health will be good.  If this balance is consistently skewed toward either acidity or alkalinity, our health will be eroded drastically.  Therefore, it is critically important to know what is going on inside our bodies with this balance, as well as the biochemical balance created by vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, hormones, etc.

On a scale of 1 to 10, your pH should be between 6.5 and 7.5.

Some foods that cause a lower (more acidic) pH include:  high protein foods (meat, fish, poultry, eggs), carbohydrates (grains, breads, pastas), and coffee.

Some of the foods that increase your alkaline pH includes:  fresh vegetables (cucumbers, radishes, squash) and fruits (dried figs, raisins, apples, pears).

Results of a Balanced pH

  • Proper fat metabolism, weight control, and healthy insulin production.
  • Healthy blood pressure regulation
  • Efficient blood flow throughout arteries, veins, and heart tissue.
  • Healthy cellular regeneration and DNA/RNA synthesis.
  • Healthy cholesterol levels, preventing plaque in arteries.
  • Proper electrolyte activity, which produces energy.
  • Allows access to energy reserves.
  • Creates a healthy oxygen flow to tissues to flush toxins.
  • Promotes calcium utilization and lessens the probability of osteoporosis.
  • Promotes vital lipid fatty acid and hormonal metabolism.

How Do We Test For pH Balance?

Use litmus pH test strips by placing the strip in your urinary flow and then comparing the coloration on your strip to the pH scale to determine your pH level at that time.  For a more accurate reading, test your urinary pH five to six times within 24 hours.  One of these times should be the first thing in the morning before eating or drinking.  This should yield your best reading since your body has all night to adjust the balance if you are eating and exercising properly.
